Table Music was composed and recorded in August and September of 2020. The music was created as the score for the short film “Table #6” from Gonzalo Fernandez and Daan Simons.
“Table #6” shows the making of a wooden table without glue or screws, inspired by Japanese joinery. The step-by-step process of woodworker Daan Simons building a pear wood table is captured and portrayed in a poetic manner which reflects the artistry of the woodworking itself. “Table #6” was filmed, directed and edited by Gonzalo Fernandez. This is Chris’ third collaboration with Gonzalo (following "Colloseum" and "La Isola"), and when Gonzalo proposed making an original score for Table # 6, Tczeebo seemed like the perfect fit.
As we (Aaron, Dave & Chris) are living in different countries and were limited in our mobility due to the pandemic, we were forced to record the music separately. This approach had its difficulties, but eventually yielded interesting results that we may not have achieved using traditional methods.
Gonzalo had already made an edit of the film with reference music, so we used that as a springboard; One of us would improvise or compose a part inspired by the reference, then send that along to the next to overdub their part, and so on. Chris mixed the gathered elements and then sent them back around for Dave or Aaron to replace parts or do extra overdubs etc., continuing this circular process until we were happy with the outcome. The resulting music is part composed, part improvised, and largely a patchwork collage of both.
Dave recorded at home and in Studio SoundHome in Brooklyn, Aaron recorded at home and on the road in New York and Pennsylvania, and Chris recorded at Studio Delphine in Amsterdam, NL. Thanks to Bo Koek for listening to the mixes and offering feedback, and to Ralf Pouw for doing a wonderful job mastering the record.
